This session prepares jobsite employees and supervisors to comply with construction safety requirements and the NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace.  The presentation will address OSHA Subpart K and OSHA Subpart S, as well as the NFPA Standard, so that workers can assess different hazard levels and implement appropriate protective measures.  Participants will gain knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures, energized work permits, and the selection, use, and inspection of PPE.  A unique combination of lecture, video, and hands-on demonstrations distinguishes this learning experience from other lessons on this topic.

This session will concentrate on SIF (Serious Injury and Fatality) events, and how they are under-appreciated, but present great opportunities for corrective action.  Implementation of a Serious Injury and Fatality Program requires less of a philosophical focus on circumstances that lead to an injury (reactive response), and more emphasis on factors that give rise to the potential for a serious incident (proactive response).  In the end, however, SIF events should inspire performance of a root cause analysis, which has time and cost implications.

Construction workers are at an especially high risk for exposure to respirable crystalline silica, which is the by-product of cutting, grinding, sawing cement and concrete materials.  Airborne silica dust, when inhaled on jobsites in excess, can cause permanent illness.  This session introduces the risks, raises awareness of the dangers, and provides recommendations about how to safely perform essential tasks in an environment where silica is present.

Pursuant to the ANSI A92 Safe Use and Training Standard, any person who plans, supervises, or manages work at height with a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) is required to complete supervisor training.  As an authorized IPAF training center, the Construction Safety Council offers this session to educate employers about what they need to know to ensure safe and effective use of MEWPs on-site, including planning the job, conducting a risk assessment, selecting cost-efficient equipment, and mitigating all possible hazards.
